Of Interest to Parents and Students

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the Kalamazoo Area Music Teachers Association (KAMTA) website!  It is hoped that you will find this site useful and supportive to your needs.  If there are comments, questions, or suggestions regarding this site, please send them to: newelshman@charter.net .

Other websites which may be of use to parents and students can be found by visiting the Links” page of this site.

KAMTA’S primary concern for parents is that you be able to access information regarding members of the Kalamazoo Area Music Teachers Association.  Members of KAMTA are not only accountable to you as our clients, but are professionally accountable to each other as colleagues.  Even though each individual instructor has his/her own specific style of teaching, there are still basic professional and ethical teaching standards to which all members of KAMTA adhere.

Every member of the Kalamazoo Area Music Teachers Association is also an affiliate member of the Michigan Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association.  (These websites are also accessible through the Links” page.

Piano Student Repertoire Classes

Piano students of KAMTA members are invited to attend monthly piano repertoire classes from October through May.  They are held on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the home of Jill Christian.

Students in grades 9-12 meet on the FIRST Tuesday of the month.

Students in grades 4-8 meet on the SECOND Tuesday of the month.

Students in grades 1-4 meet on the THIRD Friday of the month.

All levels of piano ability and performance are very welcome.  The classes are designed so that students will feel comfortable and that they will enjoy the process of learning and performing for their peers.  Students play pieces of any length which they have been preparing.  Some students play pieces that are still in the learning stages, while other students play pieces that are more polished and performance-ready.   After each student plays, the group makes positive constructive comments about the performance.  These performances are informal, giving an opportunity to share music at any stage on the day of the class.  Usually students are happy to try their pieces for others in the group, but performing at every class is voluntary, not mandatory.
